The yoga retreat on Roatan last week gave me the opportunity to meet amazing people doing creative and brave things with their lives, and to deepen my relationship with students I’ve known for awhile – but never really had the time to spend with in a relaxed and open setting. We laughed a lot, snorkeled, kayaked, explored and did lots of yoga and meditation! Many thanks to the folks at Upachaya – Barbara, Duane and Rosario for making our stay comfortable and fun! Experience Yoga Retreats is currently setting the details for next year – stay tuned!

It’s the year of the Dragon!

The Chinese zodiac employs 12 animals which are said to influence our personality depending on the year we were born. For those born in the Year of the Dragon, they are said to embrace the following positive qualities: Magnanimous, stately, vigorous, strong, self-assured, proud, noble, direct, dignified, eccentric, intellectual, fiery, passionate, decisive, pioneering, artistic, generous, loyal.

On the negative side it is said they can be tactless, arrogant, imperious, tyrannical, demanding, intolerant, dogmatic, violent, impetuous, brash.

These 12 signs repeat within a pattern of the elements – so you might be a Dragon born under Water, Fire, Earth or Metal. The Chinese New Year is based on a lunar calendar and generally starts in February

If you find this intriguing, read more about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_zodiac

A quick way to warm up if you are feeling cold to the bone is to buy some ginger, peel it – unless it’s organic then you don’t have to peel it but wash it really well either way – and slice it rather thin.

You can do round pieces or long julienne slices if you like to cut!

Take a 2 quart sized pot and throw in a handful of ginger and bring it to a rapid boil - then lower til it just stays above the boil point but not so it will evaporate too much – for 10 to 15 minutes.

You can probably re-use that same ginger for another pot even, adding some more fresh to it.

Just strain the ginger and drink it – add a little honey or lemon if you like.

Good for the digestion and nausea, and it will stimulate inner heat.

You can use more or less ginger, and boil longer or less, depending how strong you like it.
